Frequently Asked Questions

The following FAQs appear on the Cathedral City website.

Q: What’s the issue?

A: Cathedral City is committed to maintaining our great quality of life and keeping our community a desirable place to live, do business, and raise a family.

But as the City faces State budget cuts, and the need for services increases, we have some challenging choices to make.

Q: Will State takeaways impact our safety services?

A:  Yes. Most recent crime data reports for Cathedral City found a five-year high with over 825 reported burglaries and thefts, including more than 250 car thefts.

Additionally - last year alone, approximately 77% of calls to Cathedral City Fire Department have been related to medical emergencies- when seconds count in emergency response.

Takeaways of funds will impact the City’s ability to provide lifesaving equipment -impacting 911 emergency response times, as well as providing levels of police patrols in neighborhoods and business areas to keep residents and their property safe.

Q: Will our street repair efforts be impacted by State actions?

A: Yes. Independent engineers rated nearly two-thirds of Cathedral City’s streets and roads as “fair,” “poor,” or “very poor”. Even with the work the City has been doing on this issue, with this year’s rainy season, the roads have only gotten worse.

The delays caused by state takeaways in addressing these needed street and pothole repairs increase the likelihood that the problem gets even worse and becomes more expensive to fix.

Q. Can the State help?

A. Historically, when the State has had funding issues, they have taken funding from municipalities like Cathedral City to address their budget needs- and in the last five years alone, state actions have caused the loss of over $30 million from our city. At the start of a likely multi-year budget deficit in Sacramento, Cathedral City cannot count on their support.

Q: What is the City doing about this?

A: The City recently conducted an updated Cathedral City community outreach survey to get initial input to help inform our next steps. Service priorities identified by your neighbors include:

  • Maintaining 911 medical emergency ambulance/paramedic, fire protection, and police protection/response

  • Recruiting and retaining well-trained paramedics and firefighters

  • Repairing neighborhood streets and potholes

  • Maintaining gang prevention programs

  • Preparing for, responding to, and recovering from rainstorms and other natural disasters

  • Helping prevent property crimes, including thefts and burglaries

  • Keeping parks safe and secure, including addressing homelessness

If you were one of the residents who responded to the City’s survey, thank you!
